Radical Corner: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Empty

This week, I would be taking a look at Resident Evil 5, but some friends, dukey, have told me that they have yet to play KOTOR, so let’s take a look at the game of the year in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I am sure that when anyone mentions Star Wars the two trilogies come to mind, but I’ll attempt to change that!

KOTOR is an RPG set in a "galaxy far, far away". The combat is very smooth and responsive, every time there is a possible encounter the game pauses so you can plan out your attacks. You can plan as far as 4 moves ahead, with force powers being at your disposal after you have become a Jedi, after about 5 times of playtime. You also have the ability to throw grenade, once you pick them up from crates, or fallen enemies. Even though this pausing, the combat was real time. Implementing pauses during fights is very crucial, since it’s a life saviour in many occasions.

Every time you level up, you get a point to spend in attributes, powers and feats. The game gives a complete explanation of each power, attribute and feat and what it does. After you have become a Jedi, you also gain 1 force point every level you gain. All our favourite force powers are in here, some examples would be force push, drain life, throw lightsaber, force lightning and force persuade. Man, how much money have I spared from force persuade…Someone’s asks me for money…BAM! Force persuade, free. I do a job for someone, BAM! Force persuade, I get double of the original reward.

The game stays true to the movies. KOTOR has some of the original characters, like Yoda or even Jabba the Hut. Lord Malak also pays a huge resemblance to one Darth Vader, if you ask me. As a star wars nerd, I always got excited interacting with them or trying to find people that look like the original cast. Cheating Jabba the Hut out of money with Force Persuade has never been more fun!

There are a maximum of nine characters that come with you as your trip goes on. Personally, I only have eight, since I killed the nineth one. That bitch didn’t want to listen and so I killed her, what an idiot you are…Juhani. Even though you have ninecharacters at your disposal, you can only have three with you at a time. If you want the full KOTOR experience…let Jolee be in your party at all times, his ridiculously cheesy/funny comments on even THE MOST serious situations, are very amusing!

A Star Wars RPG wouldn’t be complete without armor and weapons. You can gain armor from fallen enemies or friends. I personally like to use the dark jedi master robe, even though I am a Light Jedi, since it’s much more stylish than the plain brown one the light side has. I liked it how there were LS items that would be unavailable to you if you were on the dark side. The items you loot are also usable by your partners. All character items are stored in one inventory, and that’s fine…Until it becomes a HUGE clusterfuck. Seriously, at this very moment I might have more than 200 in my inventory, most of them…I don’t even know what they do!

Before you become a Jedi, you can wield your standard long/short sword or a blaster. If you decide on one type of weapons, from blasters, two lightsabers/ one double headed or a single lightsaber, you can add points so you improve the damage dealt and decrease the penalty when using two lightsabers or the double headed one. This is very crucial, make up your mind of what lightsaber you will use in the future!

After you have bordered the ebon hawk for the first time, a weaponry desk becomes available to you. Here, you can upgrade blasters, armor, swords and saber’s. You can change a blaster’s handle or even add a sniper scope, change the colour of your saber or even enhance your armor’s power with a chain mesh.

Easy Swoop Racing Pictures, Images and Photos

Besides your favourite past time, killing people, you can engage to two other activities in every planet. You can play a type of card games, Paazak. It’s the Black Jack of the time. The other activity is a personal favourite, swoop racing. As a kid growing up, I enjoyed the n64 swoop racing game A LOT! This is very similar, but simpler. There are also two or three situations where you shoot tie fighters from the ebon hawk using a turret. That’s also pretty fun and surprisingly enough one of the most challenging parts of the game!

Am I fanboying out? Probably…but with a good reason! I do actually have some gripes with the game though. Technical issues that appear here and there make the game a little less appealing. Half of Zaalbar’s body being underground and only his head being above, people appearing in front of you when you’re having a dialogue ,locking your view of the guy you are talking to and lastly when The Apprentice, my character’s name, doesn’t want to attack. I queue up attacks and he just stands there doing nothing, I have to manually make him walk and then queue up new moves, this problem doesn’t happen very often, but when it does…Its annoying!

Back tracking…What is it? Well its when you go in the depths of a forest, do a deed and then you’re asked to go back and report to someone all the way back where you begun. There is actually one force power that can help make this less “painful”, burst of speed. With this force power u go double as fast and two of the supporting characters have it. I usually use them to do all the back tracking if their available since I don’t want to waste force points on it.

People identify Star Wars differently. I usually identify Star Wars by the John Williams classic and the lightsaber sound effects. When you are on board of Lord Malak’s ship, you can hear a very familiar song playing. When you clash in a lightsaber fight, you can hear very familiar noises. The whole thing is...very familiar.

The characters talking some galaxian language are very amusing at first, but get very repetitive and blunt, when everyone has something different to say but the sounds they make, are the same. The music in most stages is relaxing, or nerve racking depending on the situation. There is also voice acting for almost every character, besides you. I never understood this…In every RPG, everybody is given a voice except you…There should be some preset voices for male and female that read all the possible dialogue choices so you actually say what you choose to. Some might say that’s a lot of work, agreed, then just make one male, one female to say the MAJOR dialogue parts of this epic novel game.

This game also includes the most nerve breaking, amazingly intriguing prevalence in the history of video games. The cinematic used for the prevalence is so nerve racking, I get “Goosebumps” even after I’ve seen the cinematic for more than three times.

In that tone I get to the final and most important part of this review…The Story. The main thing someone wants to find in a Role-Playing game is the story of the game. This game begins when you wake up with an explosion. You then escape from the Sith with Carth, one of the best pilots of the Republic. You are then told that a Jedi also escaped from the battle ship, named Bastila. Your main quest then is to find Bastila and lead her back to Dantooine where she can report back to the Jedi Council. Taris, the planet you landed on, is controlled by the Sith and they don’t allow any ships outside without permission. The problem is, Lord Malak wants Bastila alive because of her Battle Meditation. The Battle Meditation can control the whole Republic’s army.

After you escape Taris, you discover that you are strong with the force and you become a Padawan. Your first task is the most hardcore first task anyone has ever been given. The explanation being, sending a known Jedi might trigger Malak’s defences, but wait…isn’t he searching for Bastila? Then why does she join you in your journey? Eh who cares! Yoda tells you, that you and Bastila share visions and have a bond with the Force. You are then told to allocate Star Maps that will then lead you to the Star Forge, these maps can be found on planets known to fans, such as Tantooine. The Jedi Council believes the Star Forge is the main source of Malak’s power, and if u find and destroy it, you can defeat the Dark Side.

When you are playing through this game, pay attention to EVERY little detail, because its always foreshadowing and most stuff the characters say gives you little hints to what is going to come in the near future.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best games ever created. I can honestly say that this is the best RPG ever created and the best Star Wars video game, maybe behind Battlefront. If the problems I mentioned weren’t present…This game would be the best game ever created. If you have 60 bucks, go to amazon.com and buy this game 3 times, instead of getting a new game…and may the Force be with you and Bioware.
