In school I was the worst for this. It all started with Super Mario 3.
Now when I was a wee lad of 8 years old back in 1989 a guy in the grade above me brought to school with him that beautiful yellow box with super mario 3 adorned on the cover. I never really new the kid, never really wanted to, but when he showed up holding that holy grail of 8-bit majesty he instantly became the best man at my wedding. Well maybe not that far, but I then made my move to start talking to the kid about games. In short the whole time I was thinking, k dude just shut the fuck up, lets go play some mario 3. He was the ONLY kid in town that had the game.... well there was only 500 people in that town but who the fuck care right? Anyway I was the first one in town to beat the game, I made the kid come over to my house and we stayed up until 5 in the morning on my small 13 inch tv. But this is not the point, the point his I just became his friend to play SMB3.
I did this all the time. When Megaman5 came out I befriended this weirdo who had a fat brother who used to cry. I befriended a kid because he was the only kid in town that had a snes. I even befriended kids to play the god damn original gameboy.
It became clear to me though...all through elementary school, it was the video games that became my friend, and not the real people. All those kids I scammed I dont even talk to, heck they are not even on my facebook.
Those days are gone now though, and A little part of me has died knowing I cannot be friends with people just to play there video games anymore........sad really.
